Septic Tank and System Repair
A malfunctioning septic system rarely fixes itself. Left unaddressed, minor problems escalate into major failures—and the cost difference between early repair and emergency replacement can be substantial. Our repair services address issues throughout the system, from inlet pipe to drain field.
Common Septic Problems in Bexar County
Baffle Failure Inlet and outlet baffles direct flow through the tank and prevent solids from escaping to the drain field. Older concrete baffles deteriorate over time; plastic replacements eventually become brittle. When baffles fail, solids flow directly to the drain field, causing accelerated clogging.
Tank Cracks and Leaks Concrete tanks can crack from ground movement, tree root pressure, or simple age. Steel tanks rust through. Fiberglass tanks occasionally develop stress fractures. Leaking tanks allow untreated sewage to contaminate surrounding soil and groundwater.
Effluent Filter Clogs Modern systems include effluent filters at the outlet to catch solids before they reach the drain field. These require periodic cleaning; neglected filters eventually block completely, causing backup into the house.
Distribution Box Issues The D-box splits effluent flow between multiple drain field lines. Settling, root intrusion, or inlet/outlet damage creates uneven distribution, overloading some lines while leaving others dry.
Line Blockages Roots, accumulated solids, or pipe damage can block the lines connecting your house to the tank or the tank to the drain field. Blockages cause slow drains, backups, and sewage surfacing in the yard.
Pump Failures Systems with lift stations, dosing chambers, or aerobic treatment units depend on pumps and blowers. These mechanical components have finite lifespans and require periodic replacement.
Our Repair Process
Diagnosis First Before digging, we determine what's actually wrong. This typically involves pumping the tank to inspect its interior, running a camera through lines to identify blockages or damage, and testing system components.
Accurate diagnosis prevents the expensive mistake of replacing components that weren't the actual problem.
Targeted Repairs Once we've identified the issue, we repair or replace only what's necessary:
- Baffle replacement: installing new PVC baffles in tanks with failed concrete or deteriorated plastic originals
- Tank patching: sealing minor cracks with hydraulic cement or specialized coatings
- Lid replacement: new concrete or plastic lids for tanks with cracked or broken access covers
- Filter cleaning or replacement: restoring proper effluent flow
- Line repair: excavating and replacing damaged pipe sections
- Pump and blower replacement: new mechanical components for ATUs and lift stations
- Distribution box leveling or replacement: restoring even drain field distribution
Drain Field Restoration Partially clogged drain fields can sometimes be restored through aggressive pumping, jetting, or bacterial/chemical treatments that break down the biomat layer. This doesn't work in all cases, but when successful, it costs far less than full drain field replacement.
When Repair Isn't Enough
Some failures require system replacement rather than repair:
- Tanks with major structural damage (large cracks, collapsed sections, severe corrosion)
- Drain fields that have completely failed and cannot be restored
- Systems undersized for current household usage
- Systems that never met code and cannot be brought into compliance
We'll give you an honest assessment. If repair can buy you years of additional service life at reasonable cost, we'll recommend it. If you're pouring money into a system that needs replacement, we'll tell you that too.
Emergency Repairs
Sewage backup into your home cannot wait for a scheduled appointment. Our emergency service responds to urgent situations—backups, major leaks, system failures causing immediate health hazards—with same-day or next-day service.
